Register to Download SWMF Software

Before registering for an account, please review the following requirements and limitations.

System Requirements
The SWMF provides a framework for simulating the Sun-Earth system. Many of the models in the framework use state of the art numerical techniques that have been optimized for use on massively parallel machines. Because of this optimization, the system requirements are quite stringent:
  • SWMF runs only under the UNIX/Linux/Macintosh operating systems
  • A FORTRAN 90 (F90) compiler must be installed
  • A version of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library must be installed
  • A Perl interpreter must be installed

The items above are very real requirements. If your system does not meet these standards, then SWMF will not run on your system.

As an additional consideration, with one or two components and low resolution grids the SWMF can run even on a single-processor work station. However, to do physically meaningful runs with several components, the SWMF should run on a parallel machine with at least eight processors.

Limitations
  • The current public release of the framework is a prototype for modeling the Sun-Earth system and for doing space weather studies. This prototype should be considered preliminary and should only be used in close collaboration with CSEM.
  • Modification of the BATSRUS component of the SWMF can be done through the use of "user files" which allow modification of core pieces of the model such as boundary conditions and source terms.
While the SWMF code is currently not export-controlled, we are nevertheless required to ensure that we identify all users of this code. For this reason, we require that all users sign a hardcopy version of the License Agreement, and send it to the Center for Space Environment Modeling at the University of Michigan. Distribution of the SWMF code can only occur once a signed License Agreement is received by us.
What do I need to do?
To register and obtain the SWMF software:
  1. Verify that you meet the requirements and limitations listed above.
  2. Read the license agreement, accept and print it.
  3. Fill in and submit the registration form.
  4. Sign the printed licence agreement and send it to CSEM (contact info here) via mail or fax.

Your request will be forwarded to a representative of the SWMF working group who will enable your access. If you need assistance with this request, please e-mail SWMF Support.
